Personal Learning Networks: A Taxonomic Perspective

Personal learning networks (PLN) are not a new phenomenon. When people join together to systematically form interpersonal connections and resources that support informal learning (Trust, 2012), they are creating a PLN. However, with the dawn of the information age, the ability for teachers to connect and share has blossomed, and is no longer confined to coffee breaks and in-service days.

The above illustrates how personal contributions feed the surrounding environment: teachers, students, communities, and governments (as examples in blue), and symbiotically benefit the whole network system, including the 'self'. Within this collaborative cycle, the 'self' has socially informed input on which to 'self direct' (Smith, 1996), 'self reflect' (Gibbs, 1988), and increase 'self-efficacy'. This is my taxonomic perspective on Personal Learning Networks.

Please share your views on PLN's and any taxonomies you have developed or found interesting. You will then be part of a PLN!
