Is there a connection between environment, and imagination and creativity?

Imaginative architexture: seeking to solve problems of space, light, aesthetics and functionality

The environment and the creative person are interconnected and hold significant influence on each other. The creative person recognises gaps in the environment and seeks to close them (Runco, & Jaeger, 2012). The environment presents the framework in which ideas and creations can reach their potential.

The above illustration examples how imagination and creativity close the gap on problems present around a staircase; problems of space, light, aesthetics, and functionality.

Amy Yurko (2011) inversely discusses how environment impacts upon imagination and creativity to encourage children's curiosity and wonder.

Consider how these perspectives relate to the school environment. Is there potential for change to encourage imagination and creativity in education, and how might this be practically achieved? How might we include students in recognition of gaps in the environment, and how can we encourage creative ideas?
